Bully pulpit: A public office or other position of authority of sufficiently high rank that provides the holder with an opportunity to speak out and be listened to.
This is exactly what President Barack Obama did when he spoke at the Clinton Global Initiative this week, saying, “American tax dollars should never be used to support the trafficking of human beings.” Calling human trafficking “modern slavery,” the President said the United States must be the leader in the global movement against such crimes. Obama said the United States will undertake new steps towards eliminating such acts within its own borders, including strengthening training for prosecutors and others involved in human trafficking cases, better programs for victim rehabilitation, and a push to use technology to fight trafficking criminals who use the Internet as a means of exploitation.
The President also issued an Executive Order tightening the rules on federal contractors and subcontractors so that they are not using questionable or fraudulent forms of recruiting, destroying employee identification documents or denying access to those documents.
As the President went on to say, “Nations must speak with one voice — that our people and our children are not for sale.”
We wholeheartedly agree, Mr. President. Thank you.
