International Day of the Girl
Happy Girl Day!
Today, October 11, 2012, is the first observance of International Day of the Girl.
On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed the Resolution on the International Day of the Girl Child, “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.”
The campaign to establish this international day was led in the United States by School Girls Unite, an organization of students and young women leaders determined to advance the UN Millennium Development Goals related to gender equality and universal basic education, as well as other human rights issues.
There are activities and events to mark the Day around the world, but the group also encourages women and girls to act locally by providing online tool kits and resources to help start the conversation on important issues affecting girls around the world, including illiteracy, forced marriage, violence and body image.
Please take a moment to discuss these important issues with both the women and men in your life. Only through education and information can we begin to create this much needed change in the lives of girls worldwide.
